If I had to define it, I would say it's when a writer takes on a style or perspective that's deliberately less sophisticated. It can look like heavy-handed "defamiliarization" techniques (describing common dynamics as though they were an alien encountering them for the first time), or describing something ambiguous and complex as though it were simple and clear, or insisting on their own innocence when it comes to common human failings.
